The layered deposit in Ganges Chasma provides a striking color contrast against the dark dunes and sand sheets shown in this THEMIS color VIS image. The sand is likely responsible for the yardang-style of erosion of the layered material. Dark sand can be seen within the troughs and on top of the mesa, evidence of its movement across the layered deposit. Note how the dark hills affect the sand movement around them.
