Lava flows from the broad shield volcano Syrtis Major have poured into the Isidis Basin to the east. The transition be- tween these great provinces is marked by broken slabs of accumulated volcanic material that is retreating from its position on the floor of the basin. A jagged scarp a half a kilometer high is the result.
