About 1000 km west of the massive Elysium volcanic complex, a system of branching troughs shows a continuum of features that provides clues to their origin. Within the scene there are fully formed troughs, some approaching 2 km in depth, as well as shallow, discontinuous pits and troughs toward the top of the image. The presence of the latter landforms (pits and shallow troughs) suggests that a process of collapse is responsible for producing the deep and continuous final forms of the troughs.
