The smooth plains of Elysium embay the blocky broken up highlands of Aeolis. The plains have been interpreted by researchers to be possibly mudflows or lava flows. The blocky highlands have cracks and fractures on the surface of many of the larger blocks. Sand dunes and wind eroded surfaces are common within the highland region.
